Tokyo Electric Power Company Energy Partner Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President & Representative Director: Momoko Nagasaki; hereinafter "TEPCO EP") and AI Power Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President & Representative Director: Shinji Matsuda; hereinafter "AI Power") signed a joint research agreement on June 4 of this year for the purpose of developing next-generation secondary batteries (hereinafter "this research"). This research aims to realize high-performance and high-efficiency energy storage technology by utilizing artificial intelligence (hereinafter "AI") technology.

Background and Purpose

In recent years, with the proliferation of renewable energy, demand for high-performance energy storage technology has been rapidly increasing. However, current energy storage technologies face challenges in areas such as energy density, cost, durability, and safety, requiring further technological innovation.

Therefore, we will advance research and development of next-generation secondary batteries by combining TEPCO EP's expertise in energy storage technology and battery system research and development that contributes to improving power supply stability, with AI Power's proprietary AI technology.

Research Overview

In this research, we will utilize AI Power's proprietary AI technology to efficiently conduct optimal material exploration while advancing the development of next-generation secondary batteries. Additionally, TEPCO EP will provide demonstration testing and evaluation environments to verify the practicality of next-generation secondary batteries.

The specific research items are as follows:

1. New Material Exploration

Utilize AI technology to explore materials that achieve high energy density, long lifespan, high safety, and can be procured stably at low cost

2. Battery Design and Prototype Development

Design and prototype battery cells using the explored and identified materials and formulations

3. Demonstration Testing

Verify the performance, durability, and safety of the developed secondary batteries in the demonstration testing and evaluation environment provided by TEPCO EP

4. Technology Development for Commercialization

Design and technical examination for specification and system configuration optimization and cost reduction toward commercialization

Future Prospects

Through this research, both companies aim for early commercialization of next-generation secondary batteries and will contribute to realizing a carbon-neutral society. Additionally, we will strengthen collaboration with domestic and international partner companies and research institutions regarding the developed secondary battery technology.
